Form a Team or Join a Team today!

On Saturday, July 30^th, 2011, Independence Residences, Inc. (IRI) will hold it’s 3rd Annual Queens WALKABOUT.  It’s more than a fundraiser.  We want to raise awareness of individuals with developmental disabilities since these people are quite often forgotten: ignored.  We unite behind those living in our residences to help them show their capabilities.  In 2009 we raised $5,000 with consumers and staff collecting donations of $1, $5 etc. during June and July. The year we hope to double that amount.  The money goes into our programs and services which benefits individuals living in our 10 Queens residences as well as the others in Brooklyn and Bronx.  The funds raised are used to improve the quality of life for our individuals.   By supporting our WALKABOUT, members of our community are supporting their neighbors, friends and families as this is who our individuals are. It’s a great way to recognize and support the efforts of our individuals to become active and valued members of society. The WALKABOUT sheds light on the abilities of our individuals; they are activists and advocates for their community – often going to Albany to meet with politicians about the city and state budget, participating in the Kiwanis and their fundraising activities also.
